A route through the wild Pacific Northwest: Mount St. Helens, dramatic coastline, old-growth forests, waterfalls, small towns, and some of the most photogenic lighthouses in America.

We head south in the morning toward the volcanic heart of Oregon. Lava River Cave is a mile-long underground tunnel carved by lava flow. Then come Paulina Falls and Big Obsidian Flow — a field of volcanic glass you can walk across. By evening we reach Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the USA, filling the caldera of an ancient volcano. The water is such an intense blue that it feels unreal.
We drive toward the Pacific. Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area is 60 kilometers of sand dunes along the coastline — it looks as if a piece of the Sahara landed right beside the ocean.

Haystack Rock is the 72-meter sea stack rising straight from Cannon Beach — a cult cinematic image from “The Goonies” and many other films. At low tide, tide pools open around the rock with starfish and anemones. Then comes Ecola State Park: forest trails leading to cliffs with views of Haystack Rock and the endless coastline. In the evening — campfire by the beach, if the weather allows.
Day 6 Mount St. Helens

We cross into Washington for one of the most dramatic landscapes in America. On May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted and destroyed 600 square kilometers of forest in seconds. Today Johnston Ridge Observatory stands directly opposite the crater вАФ and you can see the scale of the disaster with your own eyes. The blasted side of the mountain, gray plains of ash, and the young forest growing back through the ruins вАФ a landscape of destruction and renewal at once.
Day 7 Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock State Park is a canyon of red cliffs above the emerald Crooked River. ItвАЩs where sport climbing in America was born and one of OregonвАЩs most recognizable landscapes. We walk the Misery Ridge trail with views that make you stop every few minutes. Then through Bend back to Portland, where the route closes вАФ and the impressions stay with you.
